hello,
i have an older pc
toshiba infinia 7201
windows 95
i have
erased something, and now when i try to
go on a website i get a message
sayingyou have performed an illegal operation...
if this problem
persists, contact the program vendor."
i've done this once before and
took it in to be fixed
and they said they had to do a "system restore"
it
doesn't matter if anything gets lost, just as long as the computer works
again.
i was wondering if you had the discs i need to perform this restore.
or if you know who might
thank you

do you have any disks from the original purchase/manufactor.they usually
have a system restore disk that will
restore without formating and saves your
old data.
a second idea would be upgrade to win98.. that usually fixes
problems like this.
also if you have a win95 disk and it will restore
without formatting you should be fine.
if you have to do a format , be
sure to save all youe valuable emails and address books etc.

Go to START then click SHUTDOWN then select RESTART in MS DOS MODE then click
OK. When the computer is in DOS mode at the DOS prompt C:\>[WINDOWS] type
"cd.." without the quotes and press enter on the key board. That should put you
in the root directory of your harddrive. Now at the DOS prompt C:\> type
"DEFRAG C:" without the quotes and press the enter key on your keyboard. Your
computer will begin to defrag your harddrive without being interfered with. When
the computer has finished defragging your harddrive type "WIN" at the DOS prompt
without the quotes and press ENTER on the keyboard to get back to the windows
desktop. Remember when you go to shutdow your computer nextime you will need to
select another option or you will end up at the DOS prompt again.Good

Sounds almost virus-like, assuming that you are connected to the internet, and
that you are running up to date anti-virus software, try downloading ad-aware
(freeware from lavasoft), some spyware will hang up your computer if it cannot
report back (can't go back out through your firewall)you will probably find that
you have 'savenow', 'onflow', 'valueclick' or some such on your system.

The solution depends on WHEN this occurs.
If it hangs at "Loging off..." then
the problem is software that's running. When you log off, Windows NT kills all
active processes that the user started. Afterwards it displays the message
"Windows is Shutting Down", and proceeds to kill all remaining processes. It
then instructs all the hardware to save active data so that they can be powered
off. This process relies on the device drivers. Should a driver fail to properly
instruct the Shutdown command to the hardware while Windows is waiting to
receive a response from the device then you will get a hang. Since you said the
monitor goes blank that means that Windows is successfully shutting down the
Video system, but something on the systemboard is not recognizing the "ACPI/APM
Power Off" command to turn off the power. Try upgrading or reinstalling your
mainboard's device drivers. Alternately this can happen if ACPI or APM Power
Management is disabled in the System BIOS settings. Enable it if it is disabled.
Note: If Windows NT5 was installed with the ACPI function disabled, you may have
to reinstall Windows to restore the Hardware Abstraction Layer with ACPI
functions.

Thanks for your time in responding. I resolved the problem by removing Windows
2000 Service Pack 2. I again downloaded SP2 and reinstalled, once again the shut
down problem started. after removing it, my computer shut down perfectly. I
don't know what the conflict might be but there's definitely a problem the SP2
is creating. I decided to run Windows 2000 without the Service Pack 2 as I was
not having any problems. I would like to know and understand what caused the
problem but I have not found any such information. If you have any info, I would
appreciate if you shared. Thanks againLou

I was given a CD Rom of music to help in practicing for our next concert and was
told that I should be able to download the pieces to my C drive.
I was able
to copy "something" to a folder by dragging the files from My Computer(where
they appeared in a RealPlayer file), but each file was only 44 bytes and
wouldn't play, so I don't know what it was I copied.
I got to learn how to

The files you copied are CDA files which is the was Windows represents a link to

To "rip" (copy to the hard disk) a track from a

If you've formatted, everything is gone.
Formatting wipes the entire FAT
table or volume descriptors and rebuilds it with a clean one.
The only thing
not affected by Formatting is Partition information, although it only defines
the file system as well as boot records and not actual files.
Therefore these
problems are unrelated. The cleanly formatted disk leaves no traces of previous
files.

hi folks, could you please help me out,

time i try and reboot my computer (win98se) i get booted into ms dos, with the
message 'bad command or file name' then it states that i am in ms dos mode, if
you want to return to normal operations, 'ie' back to windows press yes/no,
obviously i press the 'y' key or the 'enter'key then the computer seems to start
again, gets past the first screen (the one that has the f2 or enter ) options at
the bottom,
then straight after that it goes back to the original ms dos
screen with the same instructions,ie, bad cammand or file name,
so i have to
go to step by step startup ommiting anything that mentions dos, to boot into
windows.if any one can tell me what the hell to do to remedy this
problem i will be a very 'happy chappy'

You may have adjusted a setting which tells Windows to load the GUI or
not.
Check MSDOS.SYS (a hidden file)
or
Load "msconfig" from Windows
and look at the startup settings.
or
Check the AUTOEXEC.BAT file or
CONFIG.sYS for problematic TSRs.
I'm assuming that Windows is still
functioning,
to test this, run the computer in DOS mode, and then
type
"cd\windows"
"win"
and Windows should start from WIN.COM.
If
Win.com is missing you will have to restore it from the Windows 98se CD and use
"extract" to fnd the file... type "extract /?" while in the \WIN98\ directory of
the disc.

for the first entire year that I used windows ME I simply started my pc, then my
desktop appeared. at some point, I don't know exactly when (but I think it
coincided with installing and then uninstalling ACDSEE), a new "logon to user
network" window appeared each time I booted up, slowing the boot process
considerably. I just click " cancel" each time, and I haven't had any problems
since my pc's are not networked, but it is really annoying to have to go through
this extra step several times a day.
is there a way to eliminate this window
popping up each time? I have a DSL router I intend to use for both pc's, but I
don't want to network them in the forseeable future. so maybe it's possible to
edit the registry somehow? i haven't been able to find any way to remove this
logon screen in Windows. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The simplest solution is to enable "Microsoft Family Logon"
Click Start >
Settings > Control Panel > Network Settings and then [Add..] Client >
Microsoft Family Logon.
Click OK and OK then restart.

first, turn off your pc. then insert your ME boot floppy. boot up the pc.
assuming you have floppy as your first boot option in your bios, you will boot
to DOS. type scanreg/restore and hit enter.
you will be given a list of the
last four auto restore points. choose the earliest one. the pc will take over
from there. that's how to use RESTORE without starting windows. if that doesn't
work, restart the pc, and when the first black screen pops up hit DELETE, maybe
twice if neccessary. You will enter the bios. on one of the options you will be
offered a choice for your boot configuration. you probably need to use
up/down/right/left, and enter and esc. Make sure that floppy is the first, or at
least there, in the choices. then choose save and exit. restart, then follow the
above procedure. Works every time! good luck! mike

Windows explorer totally freezes my computer every time I try to open it and I

after I used Partition Magic to merge some partitions that I no longer use into
my primary one. Everything else works just fine except for Windows Explorer. I
tried using the Win 98 Upgrade cd and upgrading from 98 to 98, that went well,
but did not solve the problem. So, I am at a loss. I searched the MS knowledge

Try this - Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on System
Information. When the System Information app opens click on Tools/System File
Checker. When the System File Checker app opens click the start button. If there
is a corrupt file on your computer you will be prompted to replace it. This
could be whats causing the problem.Good Luck!

I use Notepad to code my web pages. But I've bumped into an upper limit for this
little utility. Apparently Notepad won't allow edits of pages that meet/exceed a
certain size. I get a message that says "Not enough memory to complete this

Any ideas? I've tried some of

Although it may not be helpful... all those people using windows 2000 and XP
have the new "enhanced" notepad which can handle VERY big files, and also
includes a "search and replace" option too!As for the error message "Not
enough memory".. the is actually meaning that the Notepad program can't handle a
file that large and not that your computer does not have enough
memory.

Notepad has a maximum file size limit of 32KB. If you are running into this as a
limitation, there are other text editors that avoid this limitation. My
favourite is EditPad by JGSoft.com. This is a great replacement for
notepad.

My first suggestion would be to try removing any programs from startup, those
that you can see next to the clock on the taskbar.but in my mind the two
most likely issues are either ram or windows.
if you can run data
intensive applications ok, like databases or 3d games like quake3, then i would
say your ram is probably ok.
if opening explorer crashes as the fist
thing you do in windows, and it does it alot or eveytime then i would say it's a
95% chance that it's windows. in which case you can either try installing
windows on another harddrive, install 2k over the top of your existing install (
the quickest option ) or format your existing dirve and re-install 2k onto it
fresh ( the most thorough choice ).
i would recommend trying my second
suggestion first ( install over top ).

Well depending on the nature of your problem it may actually be your hardware.
Download and run "Memtest86" from a floppy for about 30 minutes to make sure
your RAM is ok.You can also run the System File Checker utility to
verify that EXPLORER.EXE isn't corrupt.
To perform this: Click Start >
Run... > type "cmd" in the command line that appears type "sfc" to run the
checker.
If this doesn't work, then run CHKDSK
Perform the same
operation to get to the command line as above.. instead type "chkdsk c: /f /r"
to perform a thorough scan.

undone if necessary. This utility has about 750 individual tweaks that can

if you have winME you cant go to MSDOS mode.dos scandisk is better so
i'll go through that first.
to get to it in win9x select 'start',
'shutdown' then 'restart in msdos mode'. then type
cd \windows\command
NB
: if you have selected your own win dir' replace 'windows' with what ever you
chose.
then type
scandisk
otherwise shutdown all the programs
running, you can see some / most of them down by the clock. right or left click
on them and select 'exit' or 'close' or whatever looks close. also disable your
screensaver.
disabling your screensaver :
right click your desktop (
what you see when you first start windows ) and select properties on the menu
that pops down. then select the tab saying 'screen saver' at the top of the new
window. then where you can select you're screen saver select '[none]'. click

Hello,I have recently found out that my 'System Restore' function in 'ME' no
longer works. The progress bar gets to just less than half way and then my
computer restarts coming back with the message that it cannot be restored. I
have checked out the relevant website help which said their might not be enough
memory for restore to work but I have this setting on maximum. The other
suggestion I have tried is turning off S.R.rebooting and then turning it bank
on. This hasn't solved the problem. Can you help? Thanks. Steve.

No. The image contains drivers and regstry settings of a computer that will be
different than your's. You will need the Win 98 startup disc and a copy of
Windows 98 to install Windows 98.

This is a complicated story, but I will buy any fix anybody can offer. My
Toshiba laptop came with W95. On it I installed application software. The
company upgraded the system to Windows 98. Some of the previously installed app
software didn't run well. I tried to uninstall, but that didn't work. Thinking
that I couldn't reinstall the app software anyway (it was for W95), I manually
(and improperly) got rid of the old files. When I try to install the new
software, I get the #105 error. When I try to uninstall old W95 software, now I
get #103, both saying they can't find the setup.dll file. Appreciate very much
any help.

judging by my system _setup.dll is used by a programmm called InstallShield,
which i'm guessing is the one bieng used by your program to try and install the
application you want.windows is not dos and such does not handle
programs which have followed install procedures not following uninstall
procedures ( read manual deletion ).
software issues like this are always
tricky, and its' not exactly clear to me where the problem lies. have you tried
installing any other programs with success ? if the programs are on floppy disks
check to ensure they are reliable. two floppy disks creating the exact same
problem would be rare, but not impossible.
but the best place to start if
your not afraid of a little brain power, reading and exploring, is to browse
through all the documentation, text, electronic or otherwise, to find exactly
what those error codes mean. finding out may tell you the problem.
if you
have no luck on the data that you hold you may also try browsing the softwares'
web site, looking through thier list or other users problems ( if they have one
) or emailing thier support address. they are bound to have seen this problem
before and more than likely have a good solution. it is after all their
product.
you might also want to try the web site of Install Shield, if
they have one, they may also have information on the program.

I had similar problems with a couple of comps running w98. One had a virus
asociated with
'winint.exe', when the virus was removed (norton)
there
was a bogus registry entry left over that hung the system on exits to restart,
but not full shutdown. The other one had a number of spyware programs on it, it
would shut down ok only if connected to the internet: it seems that when there
was no connection, they would not shut down, so windows would not shut down,
although I have been told that some viruses can do this too.

up with that pop-up program. So far I've been unable to figure it out. Any

both other answers are correct, but if the logistics are such that you can't run
a cable, there are still a couple of solutions I can think of;
1/ set up a
Vertual Private Network (VPN) over the internet, its not that tough to do
2/
set up a wireless system (expensive, but works well over relatively short
distances - about 100m max)
3/ try one of those 'network over existing phone
lines in your home' kits. (never tried them, myself, but a couple people I know
have, and say it is not bad for file and printer sharing, but a little slow for
gaming)

I guess the first quick answer would be to make sure that when you change the
setting click 'apply' then 'ok'. from there close down IW then reopen it and see
it the setting has stuck. if so load Outlook Express and make sure the
connection there says the same thing. if all seems ok restart and check IE
again. If that fails open 'my computer' and open 'dial up networking'.
from there right click on the dial-up connection you're using and if its the
same as mine ( winME ) then click the dialing tab at the top right, then check
the dialing 'radio buttons'. apply those then restart.
if that fails then
it would definatly seem to be a windows issue, so you could try a windows update
at windowsupdate.microsoft.com if after applying all needed patches you still
have no luck really the quickest solution would try re-installing windows over
the top. it shouldn't take more than an hour ( probably less than all of the
above ) and should fix the problem.
if that seems too scary an re-install
of IE may also help.
-good luck :)

a ) _very_ very few faxes support color, and i dont think any computer fax /
modems do at all. full-stop.b ) faxes have quite a bit of data to send,
and they are limited to doing it over a copper phone line. so their result will
always suck many times worse than the cheapest printer you can find. they really
are best for only text.
so your program sounds like it is simply showing
you an honest view of what your fax will look like at the other end.
on
the upside, check to see if the 'fine-mode' option is enabled, if not it will
make the picture look a little better.
i you must send a good quality
picture post or email it. but if you email it do the recievee a favor, dont put
it in a word document first.

you can get mpg or mpeg files out there with no audio so im gonna assume here
that files that have sound simply dont play sound anymore.firstly, all
other sound is ok, right ? if you can play .avi files and cd-audio then that
indicates that all sound drivers should be ok. it would be best to test this
through the same program that your trying to play mpeg videos from, just to
check that programs settings.
if you can do the above and play sounds ok
this also rules out the sound settings in windows itself.
what im
thinking at the moment is that, if my assumptions above are correct, maybe the
required mpeg codec has 'dissapeared' from your machine.
a codec is
basically software that decodes files for your computer, thus without it your
computer cant use certain files.
the biggest giveaway to this would be an
error popping up from windows media player when your trying to play these files,
or the volume changer being unusable ( grayed, crossed out, etc ) where before
it was fine.
is this so ?
WMP also tries to automatically download
any needed codecs if it finds one it needes one it doesnt have. if your
connected to the internet at the same time as trying to play this clip then any
needed codecs should be downloaded.
so to recap
- try playing other
different types of sounds
- try to narrow to the problem to _only_ mpegs
-
try updating WMP ( although its probably fine )
- NB : you could also try
putting in "+mp3 +codec +download" ( without the quotes ) into a search engine
and find a codec to install into your machine. even if at worst it doesnt solve
the problem, it rules out one possibility.
-good luck

solutions :
A: You either back up critical files that you wish to keep,
format the HD ( format c: ) and then proceed with the reinstall
B: Attempt to

if u wanna know how much ram u have (on board memory) right click on my computer
and and click on properties and that will bring u into system properties if u r
using win98 i don't if thats the same as any other operating systems but when u
get into system properties on the general tab look at the bottom where it say
registered to, computer and under computer it will tell u how much ram (on board
memory u have) most likely 64.0MB ram and they are probly pc 100 or pc 133 dimm
slot memory oh and about they memory booster don't bother cause it will just
mess up your computer later on after using it they are useless all they do is
free up memory and right after doing so you try and open up a program and your
computer is soooooooo slow and as soon as that program opens it takes away the
memory u just tried to free up+++++++ more!!! if u think your computer is
running slow buy more sdram up it to what ever the motherboard can hold but
there is one restriction with that if u r using win98 it will not allow the
computer to use no more then like 216 mb of sdram or something like but no more
then like 220mb....... if u wanna buy more memory get it at www.compgeeks.com ,

All this is incorrect. The question is not about how much is on board...that is
a fixed amount, depending on how much you installed. The "free RAM" question is
to do with how much is free RIGHT NOW, and Winduds does a lousy job of managing
it. It leaves DLLs loaded after programs have closed, just in case they're
needed later, etc., etc. The rambooster utilities give a direct
moment-to-moment reading of how much is available, and can clear out the unused
code sitting there if you click "Optimize". They do not mess up or slow down the
computer. They also ease the load on the Virtual Memory swapping activity that
Winduds is always messing with, since unused code is wiped from RAM, not just
saved to the Swap File.

Your question implies your a little confused about memory, as downloads and
cleanups should really effect your RAM.RAM is high speed memory used to
run programs, thus the more you have the faster programs will run ( to a point )
and the better multiple programs will run at one time.
If you want to see
how much space you have left to save things, like typing or files from the
internet, then your talking hard drive space.
If you want to monitor your
RAM use then goto
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
System Monitor
If you want to see how much hard drive space you have :
double click on 'my computer', which is on your desktop. then click once on the
hard drive to look at. in your case proabable drive c, so look for somthing like
"Local Disk (C:)". either a graph should pop up showing you sapce left, or in
the bottom right-hand corner of the window you will see how much space is
free.

Did you happen to add a network card to your system or change the 'Network
Neighborhood' proporties? Either one would likely cause the network log on
screen. If that is the case, live with it, you may not be able to get on the net
if you change your log-on type.

A network card install will do this, and if this is what happened then welcome
to microsoft networking. you cant use windows without loging on. Fortunatly if
you have windows98 there is a small program on the CD which is not automatically
installed. unfortunatly i cant remember its loation and dont have the time right
now to find it. anyone else know the program im talking about?
if all you have done is do IE updates and you dont have
a network card then right click on network neighborhood, on your desktop, click
properties. you will see a list of network devices installed. if you have
anything other than "tcp/ip", "dial-up adapter" and somthing like "microsoft
family logon" then they are probably extras and may be causing the problem. note
what they are ( just in case you do need them ) then remove them. there is also
a listbox labelled "primary network logon" : try changing that if the above
doesnt work.

At fillcd.com there is a download that will let you list files that you want to
copy on another media. You can list the size of the media that you are copying
to and if it is several things that is being copied it will show which ones will
best fit on the media. After it is selected it can be moved to another place and
copied to the new media. My question is a stupid one but it must be ask anyway
since I don't know the answer. When the files that I want to copy are moved to
another place to copy, are they actually moved? If so how are they returned to
the original place?

Try using a serial port mouse and keyboard, the type that has the screws on each
side that you tighten up after connecting them. Sounds as if you may have bent
or damaged the pins in your PC where you plug in, especially if you switched
them and plugged them into the wrong place.

Take note of the applications you run when your computer hangs. There could be
one of your applications that could be incompatible with Win ME or interferes
with another application you have open. If you are trying to multi-task try
running fewer programs. Also check for patches for the software you have
installed on your computer. Most software manufacturers release patches for
thier software when they realize there are problems running it on a certain
opperating system such as Win ME. To tell you the truth Win ME is not a very
stable opperating system and there are many applications that will not properly
run on Win ME. You would be better off with Win98se or Win 2000.

What on earth happened, and how do I fix it?

OK, I'm a little closer to solving this. I checked File Types in Windows
Explorer. and found the same icon associated with Acrophobia, a game my %&%#
kids downloaded ( like, they're 19 and should know better), so I uninstalled
that. Probably a coincidence, but I felt better.
Then I
found an email from Dell I'd archived when I foolishly upgraded to Netscape 6,
which told how to re-associate files. I can now go to a file in Documents,
shift-Rclick, and tell it to always open in PBE (Adobe). Icon is still wrong,
but it opens.
Now, do I need to do this to each file
separately, or can I do something global?

Getting closer.
Opened Documents folder, went to View
Folder Options, and chose Edit file type, and edited not only the icon but told
it to open in PBE. All of the icons of that type in the folder CHANGED BACK!
Except 2, which I did by hand.
And
another, which instead of showing the thumbnail, shows a lovely icon of a
Windows Explorer type spy-glass in the disk-drive of a computer.
AAAAAAAAAAArgh
At least they all open now.

For all kinds of computer event sound wavs go to http://www.wavevents.com.
Under "Sound Links" click "Wav" links.
In the blue rectangle, click "Email notification wavs" and
under the "Variety" heading, the sixth one down is AOL's "You've got mail" wav.
A lot of the other event wavs are great, too.
Then check out "The Wave". This is an old site but he
has some great wavs. Try his Startup Sounds page at
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/7757/startup.html. I assigned the
"greetexalted.wav" to my computer start up. Now when I turn it on, instead of
the microsoft sound, Luke Skywalker says "Greetings Exalted One". I'm not a huge
Star Wars fan but when my computer greets me as "Exalted One" I can believe, if
only for a moment, that my it knows who's boss.
At the
bottom of this page are other categories and I think the AOL wav is here as
well.
Third: go to http://www.barbneal.com/wav.asp. Great wav
page. Looney Toons, movies, tv shows, whatever. There is a great selection here.

You need to do a full factory restore, not just the simple registry restore i.e.
reinstalling over the top of the OS. This should take your PC back to the
original state it was in when you brought it home. Doing the simple restore will
not get rid of the problem and it erases some of the files needed to run certain
programs. If you do not have the restore CDs, call the company who made it, give
them model and serial number and they should send you one within a few days.
Then there's always the chance you have some hardware damage but hope for the
best. You could also have some of the virus left in your boot sector. In this
event you need to use Norton Utilities. Go to "system", "performance", and look
for any messages, such as "master boot record has been modified". This will
indicate virus in boot sector. You wouldn't by chance be running an HP would
you?

Start SCANDISC
When SCANDISC opens make sure that
AUTOMATICALY FIX ERRORS has a check mark beside it. If it doesn't place the
mouse curser over the little box and click to place a check mark there. This
will fix any errors scandisc finds.
Also make sure that
THOROUGH has a check mark beside it. This performs the standard test and scans
the disc surface for errors.
Once these two items have a
check mark beside them click START.
After scandisc is
finished run DEFRAG. Defrag should run now.
Good Luck!

Move the 'wininit.exe' file out of your windows directory (don't delete it, just
move it) THEN make a fresh startup disc.
Boot from the
start up, run scandisk from a DOS prompt. If it finishes correctly, shut down,
reboot normally, try to run defrag from windows.
If this works, you had a very common virus (it comes by
e-mail, and if you have it, so do most of your e-mail corespondants who are not
running anti-virus software!) that both defrag and scandisk seem to chase around
that is connected to that wininit.exe file.
Download an anti virus program, or refresh yours if
applicable, check for viruses.
One of the aliases is "network.vbs", if I recall
correctly.
If a virus DOES show up, go to the SARC site to see how
to get rid of it, it may involve tweaking the regirtry a bit, follow directions
EXACTLY and you will be OK.
If no virus shows up, just move the wininit.exe file
back, and sorry to have bothered you, but if you were sitting here, I'd bet you
$50.00 that this virus, or one like it is causing your problem.
Note: You may get an error message when you reboot to
windows, relating to wininit.bak, "cannot find wininit.exe", "network.vbs (or
something like it) unable to find wininit.exe", or some such message, or not; it
depends on the variation of the virus you have.
Don't
panic, at worst, reuse your starup disk, and move the wininit.exe file back.
(Getting the message just about proves that you have the virus)

Last night I purchased a 500 mhz Pentium III, which was slightly used. Before I
bought it, I watched the previous owner run windows, so I know that the computer
worked. As soon as I got home, I formatted the hard drive, and then inserted a
startup disk, but it said that it was an invalid startup disk, and to enter one
that worked. I kept trying different disks, and different startup disks, since I
have a couple computers, but it always gave me the same invalid system disk
message. I am positive that these startup disks work because I have tried them
on numerous computers. I bought this computer for my girlfriend, and I am just
trying to set up windows and the basic stuff before I give it to her, but I
can't do this when I have a formatted hard drive and I am unable to even boot to
DOS or anything with a startup disk. I have already set the floppy drive to the
first bootable drive, I have already set it to look for a floppy to start off
of, and the floppy drive's green light turns on whenever it is searching the
drive for a startup disk, so I know that it is communicating with the computer.

Since the startup disc is recognized on your other computer your problem could
be one of three things with the PIII 500.
1)The floppy drive could be damaged.
2)The floppy's data cable could be damaged.
3)The floppy drive port on the motherboard could be
damaged.
To find out remove the floppy drive along with the data
cable from the PIII 500. Remove the floppy drive along with the data cable from
your other computer and install it in the PIII 500. Before connecting the data
cable to the motherboard check for any bent or missing pins on the FDD port on
the motherboard. Place your Startup disc in the floppy drive and turn on the
PIII 500. If the startup disc is recognized then it is either the floppy drive
or the data cable that is damaged on the original floppy drive. If the startup
disc is not recognized then more than likely the FDD port is damaged on the
motherboard which means you will need a new motherboard.
Good luck!

Had a similar problem on a windows 98SE system.
I
tweaked the registry. I had a 'shut down' value of '1' that should have been
'0'. (If you have never looked at your registry, this may not make sense, but
run regedit, if it works undy ME, and look to see what I mean.) Upon research,
the registry was changed by a virus, it was long enough ago, I forget which
virus, but it changed the winint.exe file.

I suspect that you have used up all the licences available.
This does not mean that you can't use those machines or
that you really need to buy (or configure for) more licences, but rather that
the maximum number of SIMILTANIOUS users has been reached. Try logging off a few
PCs that do work, and attempting to access ACCESS on the PCs that don't. (I am
not sure whether you need to reboot or not, but I don't think so.) I think that
you will find that the not-working machines now work, but the problem has
migrated to different computers. If this IS the result, you know that you need
more licences to run all computers at the same time, if not, then you may indeed
has a software problem.

Can you believe it, forgot my password. Oh, well. I ended up doing a simple
reinstall. It allowed me to download and setup Active X and replace the file and
I didn't lose any downloaded or installed programs except for one educational

Try this, (if the other 'solution' did not work).
Go to add/remove programs, windows setup, multimedia.
Remove volume control. Reboot. Go there again and re-install volume control.
P.S. Make sure you have your windows CD handy, or a copy

Yes, That was the first thing I tried. I also checked with the microsoft support
site and couldn't find this problem listed. No matter what I do I get the same
message and have completely lost access to the USB ports. The USB root hub is
disabled in device properties. I have tried many times to re-install through
device manager and by deleting the USB root hub altogether. Auto detect of Win98
detects the hardware but does not complete the install as they continue to show
disabled in Device Manager.

Sounds like you are loading an NT version of the driver.
Also check CMOS setup to make sure you do not have USB

First Of All. Are you creating an audio cd or a data CD?
If you care creating a data cd then the wave files may be
over 650mb.
If you are creaing an Audio CD then the
length of the audio might be over 74 minutes.

ok the only reason why u have only 4 songs to work is because they r wave files
and wave files r compressed files and i don't recommend using them what u gotta
do is download a program to convert the wave into mp3 format that will solve
your problem and then burn them onto cd depending on the size of the songs after
converting them to mp3 format then u should be able to put about 16 songs onto
one cd oh and another thing,
cds can hold either 74
minutes of music or 650-700 mb of music (example) if your music is over 74
minutes long but is still less then 650-700mb it will still burn to cd , i
suggest u down load a program for burning the cds like nero burning rom, or easy
cd creator that will solve your problems but make sure u convert the wave files
into mp3 format or else it will never work or play on any cd player.. goodluck

Remove the network card, the modem, and rem out any ref to networking in the
Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.
Reboot.
If messages are gone, re-install the hardware, reload
the drivers, reboot.
You likely had a legacy problem from the old OS, WFW
networking, or an old network card (some do not have W98 drivers available)
would cause the problem, so if you still have the problem, get a new NIC
($15.00CDN to hundreds, depending where you go and the type you get)
If you didn't have a NIC or modem to start with, and you
have access to the old software, backup any files you want to keep, fdisk,
reformat and reload.

# 95: RE: 16mm and vhs input

You need a card that allows video input (a TV tuner card for example about
$70.00CDN min) and a vcr. You also need enough disk space to store the amount of
video you want to capture and edit (a few hundred megs at least)and enough
system ram and video ram and a fast enough cpu to make the process work with any
kind of speed. (If you have LOTS of ram, you might try to set up a ramdrive to
speed up the process but remember that it will clear if you reboot, so save all
work to hard drive regularly.)
Now let's assume that you have the finished, edited
video on your hard drive. What do you want to do with it? You could burn a CD,
or just save the file on your hard drive if you want just want to watch it on
your computer. Or... if your 'card' also has video or TV out, then you can
record it back to your VCR.
Your 16mm is 'easy'. Play it in a quite room, and record
with a video camera. I would suggest that you test your setup to make sure of
sound and image quality before playing a whole movie, just to save time and
agrivation. You might also borrow or rent a HIGH quality video camera if you
don't own one, or if you can't get good quality from your own equipment.
Can you afford it? It depends on how much of above stuff
you already have, and/or the time you are willing to invest in the project.
If you have, or know someone with one of those new Mac
machines with a DVD burner that would be worth a try too.

be accessed by going through Start-Programs-Accessories. You can, in just a few

Try to repair Outlook. If you can get into Outlook but can't access anything,
then from the Help menu there is a Detect and Repair option. If not, just start
the Outlook setup and there will be an option to repair. This will replace any
corrupt or missing files. It might help.

Your Outlook Store files may be corrupt.
Try temporarily
moving them to another folder and attempting to start Outlook. If it will load
then you must repair your Store files and replace them to their normal
location.
They are typically located in
"C:\Windows\Application
Data\Microsoft\Identities\Outlook\{D23423534-3455454433(name varies)}\"
** or **
"c:\Windows\Application
Data\Identities\{D23423534-3455454433(name varies)}\Microsoft\Outlook\"
It's possible your files are saved under
"C:\Windows\Application Data\{D345435-345345445(name
varies)}\Microsoft\Office\Outlook" as well...
The best
way to find the files is to Search for inbox.pst (Outlook) or inbox.dbx (Outlook
Express)
You'll know you've selected the correct
identitiy because each file will be named after the Outlook folder it
contains.
I believe Microsoft provides a utility to
repair the Store files.

Although I do not like the Norton Utilities suite as a whole, the defrag utility
that comes with it is excellent. It is called Speed Disk and is much better than
Windows Defrag. Executive Software has a product called Diskeeper that is
excellent as well.
There is a free defrag utility called
PowerDefrag available at PowerDefrag.com that I've heard good things about, but
never tried myself.
If you just want to backup files,
the CD-RW drive probably came with some software to do that. If you want to
image your hard drive, then try Norton Ghost or PowerQuest DriveImage.

Odd as it does seem, you can still get hold of Win 95 OSR2 if that is what you
want to do.
My advice would be to get a copy of Win 98, and then use
98 Lite www.98lite.net This is a custom installer for Win 98 which retains it's
improved compatibility and reliability, but allows you to use your old Win95
shell, and prevent the install of Internet Explorer 5 etc. Giving a BIG speed

If possible, the best thing to do is to use Windows 98 SE or Windows 2000. The
original Windows 95 isn't supported by Microsoft anymore and is already 4
versions old (it came before 95B, 98, 98 SE, ME).
However, if the drive will work with 95B, I don't see why
it wouldn't work with 95A.

You cannot do this, because the fractions don't exist in the font. Having a
character as a fraction (ascii 188 is usually 1/4, for instance) is nice, but
obviously, there are more possibilities than there are characters.
Sorry.
